Inspiration in Seeds

I signed up for a seed art class recently and it’s opened up many new avenues for me. Avenues that are effecting my design process in tapestry and expanding my awareness on a daily basis. I’ve been interested in seeds and learning native species in my area for a number of years now. I guess that’s how I discovered Sophie Munns. Sophie is an Australian artist that I have been following on facebook and instagram.

In her posts, she would often reference a workshop she was teaching or show student work (with intriguing ink drawings of seeds in many forms). I don’t think I would have ever considered actually attending one of her workshops in Australia, but when she mentioned she was researching how to take her workshops online, I got excited.

The course is called the Seed Art Intro Online Class at Seed Art Lab and is very affordably priced. It’s more than just a class on drawing seeds. It’s full of inspiration and paths to remote discoveries rich in art, culture, and the world of botany.

Inspiration in art

I’ve been inspired by every single email communication she has sent. This seed exploration has led me to places I would not have gone. It even led me to discovering tapestries I didn’t know existed! In one of her email communications, Sophie included a quote by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and a new book that was out, Hundertwasser For Future by Hatje Cantz. The quote resonated with me and the name was vaguely familiar, so I plunged down the rabbit hole and found this website - and, much to my surprise- tapestries

It’s been a fascinating journey and I’m just beginning to see where it can lead to in my tapestry work. I’m looking at seeds - and the world around me - a little bit differently as a result.

We’re all aware what a difficult time we’re living in.

Seeds are more important than ever.

Seeds of kindness.

Seeds to nurture and feed us.

Seeds of hope.
