Wrapping

This is an interesting one, capable of creating dramatic results. The video shows wrapping along the fell line horizontally, but shapes can be outlined with this technique, too.

To create a wrapped line, you will need a core bundle to wrap around. The bundle can be a single cord or a number of threads- or whatever you prefer. It doesn’t have to be yarn! The wrapping weft should cover the bundle or core that is being wrapped. In the video, the wrapping is done with 3 strands of Faro yarn over 5 strands of 12/9 cotton seine twine.

.

To work the wrap in a line:

If the bundle is more than one strand, it may help to make a knot so the ends don’t slip around. Insert the end between two warp threads.

Begin with a double half-hitch around the warp thread before the wrapped area is to begin (to the left of the inserted bundle).

Then moving the bundle to the left, make a Closed Soumak around the next warp thread.

Move the bundle to the right and make a Closed Soumak around the same warp thread - above the bundle - to lock it in place.

Repeat these 2 steps across the row.

To end, reverse the movements by pushing the bundle between the warp threads, then making a double half-hitch around the next warp thread.

Ends will need to be secured and depending on the bundle, you could tie a knot, sew in each thread from the bundle, or stitch down the threads as you would warp at the end of weavings.
