“Rising” 2024

“Rising” is woven at 16/8EPI with 20/6 cotton seine twine for warp. Weft yarns used are EPiC, Array, Mora, and Weavers Bazaar with bits of Faro, silk, linen, and bamboo.

Size is 33.5” wide by 20” high.

Lots of eccentric weaving here. In my Elements course, we have a (currently ongoing as of 2024) Silvia Heyden study group that formed in early 2022 and I couldn’t help but think about some of her techniques as I was working on this piece. Thus, the large mounds (“half-rounds”). The piling up of weft creates a third dimension to the piece. Edges stayed fairly uniform, although a push out can be seen at the bottom edge.

I started this piece because the loom had been warped and ready for over a year- but my plans had changed. In between other projects, I felt a surge of purging any preconceived ideas and starting fresh. I pulled together all my ends from previous tapestries and sat down at the loom. It was such a refreshing way to work. Challenging at times, but in a good way.
